it was our personal belief that if you could fight or die for the country or vote in an election, you should be able to go to a party. [applause] the folks that we were working with at the police department were hesitant about that. to address their concerns we agreed to very stringent beer gardens, which we did not feel like needed, but we did it in order to produce the event. later, we found out it would not be an 18 and older event. it essentially became a non- negotiable item. if we wanted them to sign off on the permit, with a bar, which was a major revenue stream, we had to be 21 and over. being a promoter and organizer with a long history of doing these events without problems, with a curved track record, that seemed like a perfect result. the police requirement at the event looked like two cops, with no problems with nothing to do, there were five officers at the event now, which we had to pay overtime fees for. trying to discuss this with the officers, public safety is brought up and it is very important to me and to us. i mentioned that i had another life as a part-time psyc

[ laughter ] >> thank you. the train is just such an important part of the entire peninsula, and it's growing in popularity all the time. over 50,000 people a day are riding it now. when we first started there were about 16,000 and it was just hanging by a thread. it's doing extremely well and the hope is to take it to downtown san francisco and electrification is underway. i would like to get back to one thing you said, mr. yee, i think almost had an opportunity on december 28th to go to the divisions. and i went to woods and i know others went different places. i learned some things and there were some questions and i think at some point, another meeting or another retreat after that, miss boomer, if members have things that they learned or questions, to bring it back to this body. to me it was a very rewarding several hours' experience with the various parts of the division. with members' consent -- i know you went to the cable car barn with your kids. >> i did.

i would like to recognize the department heads and elected officials. i know i've seen some of you here. thank you for coming out to support the fund workover our city employees. it is a privilege to me in particular to be here because i have had the opportunity for the last several years to be on the selection committee for the good government awards. it is really a treat. as a human-resources director, i get a lot of bad news. some of that gets in the newspaper. with all due respect to our brethren in the press, it's always a good story to write about bad behavior that may happen in a city department or that a public employee may have engaged in. we are the largest employer in san francisco. it is only natural as some of that bad behavior may fall on our doorsteps. it is refreshing to see some of the wonderful work people are doing, who really personify the ethos of san francisco. i want to celebrate that. on behalf of the mayor, thank you. please do your part to extend your appreciation to those people. it was a very difficult process. the community

if they can't subdue somebody with all the training they had why do they have to elect cute somebody into submission? the united nations it's it's a torture device. where i came from in chicago the victim ruled a homicide they taized him seven times and this is the stuff you all could experience. the problems i had with the police. they come in. they come through. they don't respect black people. every time i have a problem a white person every excuse they can make up to slip it under the table. the last incident i had the officer took the perpetrator -- he put them in the front seat of the car and drove away. they didn't take a statement from nobody. they put them in the front seat and went down the town so this is the type of justice we have. so i'm just -- the tazer thing is not acceptable. you have to think about people are trained -- like samurais they are trained so they can defend against someone with a sword and the cavmar -- they're trained hand to hand combat to deal with people with guns, et cetera so they don't have to use any type of weapons and we just need more trainin
